It's not hard to describe my friend Ron's dad. He was a good man who liked sporting the outdoors. He was also fond of the "flat top with a boogie," which was a hairstyle that would probably be popular nowadays.

This is a guy who loved to fish. After my pop passed he took me on many family vacations-all of them fishing, camping, hiking, or a little bit of all of them.

We went to Eagle Lake one year and trolled the lake for three days. I was the rookie, but I was also the only one to catch a fish. (No, I didn't have to say three hail mary's) And it was a big fish. He recommended we mount it, as he was an amateur taxidermist too.

I thought my mom might like it, so I put it in the freezer…but we never got around to actually eating it and eventually threw it out. I think he was a little disappointed about that, but was impressed with my catch nonetheless.

When my dad died he pulled me aside and told me that his pop had died when he was the same age, and to come to him if I or my mom ever needed anything. He was very helpful, and was saddened to hear that we lost him last year (May '03) to cancer.
