GOLDEN GATE SQUIRREL BLUES

Hear a sample of Golden Gate Squirrel Blues

My dad could really ham it up sometimes. Now, everyone in my family claims to have been there during this incident, but I'm quite positive it was only dad and me.

It must have been late 70's, and we all took a trip down to San Francisco and Golden Gate Park.

There's a park inside the park called "The Japanese Tea Gardens," which is full of Asian plants and various garden ornaments.

One thing they had plenty of were hippies and squirrels.

One hippy-type fella had this neat trick: He'd put a cracker in his mouth, point his hand close to a squirrel and the squirrel would run up his arm, grab the cracker from his mouth, and run back down his arm.

My dad and I thought the smug attitude of this guy was pretty entertaining, so my dad decided to give it a try.

He puts the cracker in his mouth, and approached the squirrel who had run up the other guy's arm.

Just as before, the squirrel took the bait and raced up his arm.

Now, when a squirrel climbs something, most people (including my dad) don't know that the squirrel really digs into whatever it is it's climbing. This, of course, freaked out my dad who threw the squirrel to the ground just when it started to scamper up his arm. I should mention that he did it in front of about 20 people, including the guy that showed him the trick.

The squirrel bounced off the sidewalk, and it first we thought it might be dead. But, up it jumped and raced into the bushes. Funnier than everyone laughing at him after was the look on his face during. It wasn't quite panic, but more like annoyance. Duh, Dad.

Note: No animals were injured during the process of my dad's stupid pet tricks.
