RECORDING NOTES

Some have asked where this was recorded, and the equipment and such. It was recorded at my house where I record everything. It's a little project studio I lovingly refer to as "The Sound Ranch." I have a 6' 1899 Model A Steinway in a living room with vaulted ceilings. I think it sounds marvelous for recording piano. In fact, everyone sounded really good in there.

For the piano, I used two microphones, an AKG C414 on the high end and a Neumann U89 on the low. I probably wouldn't use the U89 again on the low, even though it's the nicest mic in my arsenal. The U89 sounds great on horns though, which I used for Brian Kent's wonderful saxophone sound.

For Tony I also used an AKG C414, and I wouldn't do that again, either. It's great for percussive-type instruments such as piano or drums, but not the best for Tony's airy tone. It came out alright on the record, however, due to some creative mixing.

For drums I used a whole slew of microphones: SM-57s for toms and snare, a D112 on the kick, and AKG C1000s on the overheads. I think the drums came out very nice on the recording.

For recording and mixing I used and continue to use a Mackie D8B digital console and an HDR24/96 as the digital recorder.
